Rodney King wounded in shooting

RIALTO, California (CNN) -- Rodney King, whose 1991 police beating sparked widespread rioting in Los Angeles and other U.S. cities, was recovering Thursday after being slightly wounded by gunfire.

Rialto, California, Police Department Sgt. Don Lewis said King was grazed on his face, arms, back and torso. The wounds were superficial. A shotgun was believed to have been the weapon used.

Lewis said that after King was shot Wednesday night, he rode his bicycle from San Bernardino to his home in Rialto, before calling police about 11:40 p.m.

Information on possible suspects or the hospital where King was treated were not immediately available.

Amateur video captured King's beating after Los Angeles police officers stopped him for speeding March 3, 1991. Police beat King repeatedly, delivering 56 baton blows and six kicks -- causing skull fractures, and brain and kidney damage.

Four officers were charged with assault with a deadly weapon and excessive use of force but were acquitted of state charges on April 29, 1992.

The three days of rioting that followed left 55 people dead and 2,000 injured. There were 12,000 arrests and about $1 billion in property damage in Los Angeles.

Two of the officers, Sgt. Stacey Koon and officer Laurence Powell, were later convicted of federal civil rights violations.

Since then, King has had a handful of run-ins with the law, including a guilty plea in 2004 to driving under the influence of a controlled substance and reckless driving.

He's always having run ins with the law it seems....but when he was pulled over about 17 years ago and roughed up, they wheeled him out in a wheelchair, looking like he'd been through a war...IMO that caused more problems than it fixed.
His case caused the L.A. Riots, set the city back in race relations, and set a killer free...cuz without the fear of more riots, O.J. doesn't walk.

What the hell is he doin on a bicycle haha.....
but I guess its better for him to be on a bike since it seems like to me outher than this past instance with the law, he has always been in a car.

its still hard to believe that those cops were acquitted.

everyone knows OJ killed ron and nicole, and he shouldve been guilty, but damn those four cops should have been in jail as well.

All we ever saw tho was the aftermath of RK being pulled over...we didn't see what provoked it. The thing is tho, if he had been white, not much would have been said...and there would have been no riots...and OJ would have went to jail.

he reached for his asthma inhaler, remember?

he was stopped for DUID for something, i dont exactly remember.

the incident was the first to show the whole US that police brutality against blacks did happen.

WTF??? He may have been reaching for an inhaler...after leading police on a chase while under the influence, and becoming belligerant once he was stopped. He put alot of folks lives in danger and deserved a lil bit of a beat down regardless of his color. And, it was in no way the first incident to show police brutality against blacks...just the only recent one to spark riots. But, if I were a cop on that chase, I'd prolly want to beat his ass after he pulled over as well...and RK isn't a small man.
